Heavy metal deep marking solutions for the transportation industry
January 19, 2023 By: Staff Vinssa

The transportation landscape has evolved due to the major environmental challenges we face. More and more people are getting around by bicycle instead of driving cars for short journeys. In addition, there has been a considerable increase in the use of electric transportation such as bicycles and scooters.
A more accessible, affordable and faster rail network is needed to connect Europe's largest cities. More sustainable alternatives to short-haul flights are urgently needed. This implies the construction of new trains and tracks composed of parts that will need to be marked for traceability and identification purposes.

Major challenges in rail marking
In Russia, construction of faster trains and roads to connect major cities is already underway. Telesis sales manager in Russia, Vadim Zabolotnikov, met with the director of a railway plant at a trade show in Moscow, where they agreed to visit the facility and discuss the best way to permanently mark the wheels of the new trains.
The challenge was to make a 5-character mark in 12 seconds with a minimum depth of 0.4 mm on HB280 and HB320 hardness steels.

The TMP4750 portable micro-percussion marker with MultiStrike™ function was first tested at the customer's site, but the depth was not as deep as expected.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was decided to conduct another test using the TMP7000. Despite challenges in obtaining the sample material, the test was successfully carried out and the material was returned for evaluation. The customer reported an achieved depth of 0.5 to 0.7 mm.
Various brands were processed with different densities and multiple strokes, as well as varying air pressures. This proved that the TMP7000 is the ultimate system for heavy metal marking.

TELESIS won the contest thanks to the TMP7000's ability to be customized to suit the customer's production, compared to the competition which could not meet the customer's requirements.
Production of the three TMP7000 markers equipped with TMC470 PINSTAMP® controllers and customized portable tooling started immediately to meet the requested deadline.
The TMP7000 marker is a robust and powerful single-pin laser marker with a large 100 x 150 mm marking window. It is available in a fixed mount version, but for this application, it was designed with certain special features:
- Rocker arm
- Head suspension hook
- Robust positioning guard
- Two handles with a 'Start Cycle' button
- Magnets with holding force up to 200 kg
- Emergency stop button located on the marking head handle
- Special programming logic to prohibit printing without the magnets being activated
Dot peen technology provides value in numerous projects in the rail industry. TELESIS offers robust and reliable marking solutions for this market segment with constant improvements in its marking systems to meet the changing requirements of the industry.
The high demand for more train tracks, newer and better trains, in addition to legal requirements on traceability, creates incredible opportunities to implement new improvements in marking systems. Whether laser, micro-percussion or scribing, TELESIS marking systems are ready to meet these challenges.
At VINSSA we are official distributors of Telesis laser marking systems, a broad line of lasers for industrial identification and traceability.
